Every November The Greenbelt Interfaith Leadership Association (GILA) holds a Thanksgiving Celebration the night before the holiday. In addition to representing the various faiths in Greenbelt and giving thanks for the blessings of the past year, GILA requests donations for the Greenbelt Emergency Assistance Fund. This fund has done so much good work in the past year:
The Emergency Assistance Fund was established to accept and disburse donations to assist Greenbelt residents to:
- Come up with rent to avoid eviction;
- Withstand displacement by natural disasters;
- Bridge periods of food insecurity (Food Pantry); and
- Get through financial shortfalls in paying for utilities (Electric, Phone, Internet, Water and Gas).
The Emergency Assistance Fund has prevented the eviction of 92 families and helped 46 families.
We have come to Thanksgiving and GILA is again asking the Greenbelt Community to donate to the fund. The Emergency Assistance Fund has helped people who have not qualified for American Recovery Act Program (ARPA) assistance. In addition, we include Greenbelt residents who have suffered a natural disaster. These funds are unique in Prince George’s County; Greenbelt is a special community that reaches out and helps its neighbors.
You can give by:
- Making out a check to Greenbelt CARES; indicate in the memo section which fund you are giving to, and address an envelope to Greenbelt CARES, 25 Crescent Road, Greenbelt, MD 20770. You can send by US Postal Service or put the envelope in the Municipal Building’s secure drop box at 25 Crescent Road.
- Online Payment: Make a Donation to the Emergency Assistance Fund
See online form at the bottom of the page. - The St. Hugh Food Pantry is accepting grocery gift cards, $5 grocery bags purchased at the Greenbelt Coop Supermarket that are transported regularly to the Food Pantry, and non-perishable donations placed in the pink bins by St. Hugh side rectory door at 135 Crescent Road.
Thank you for your help and for being a good neighbor!
